Two video life rafts for when you’re drowning in self-doubt

by Alexa on February 3, 2010

Apparently, suffering from self-doubt is a fairly common occurrence, particularly for those for whom anything less than perfect is failure.

Bravo to Trey Pennington for finding these two very motivating clips.  The first one – a montage of Will Smith interviews – is full of reasons to believe in yourself, and gives great insight into his success.  The second, by DJ Jay Smooth, calls to light to vicious circle of procrastination and self-imposed defeatism. He talks about taking control of the “little hater” who lives in your mind and tells you why you’re no good.  I’m well familiar with her, the one I’ve named “Dickerina.”

The next time Dickerina pays me a visit, I know which post I’m going to visit.

“Procrastination is what happens when you confuse being busy with being productive” – ain’t that the truth!

I loved that quote too. Although when I watch Degrassi on line I’m pretty certain I’m procrastinating.

Will Smith’s passion and conviction is infectious. I love the line where he says if we get on a treadmill only two things are going to happen. Either You get off first, or I am going to die. It might be a bit of over reaction but if you really are that dedicated to a task, and making yourself better, then good things will happen. I certainly have a mentality like that. But I also like Seth Godin’s rule about spending 10,000 hours on a task to get REALLY good at it.

Hi William. That treadmill comment really stuck with me, too. It’s hard not to be a fan of Will Smith after watching this video.

Malcolm Gladwell also talks about the 10k hour rule in Outliers – you might enjoy it. Personally, if I can spend 10 hours on something I consider that a victory.
